Real Men Use PCs (or, Please Don't Punch Me!)

It is with no small amount of hesitation and trepidation that we step into the current fray going on about Macs vs. PCs. However, our father's thoughts on the matter, which he shared last night, we have deemed worthy of publication:

"Everyone who really works uses a PC. Macs are for those artsy types. I don't understand why they refuse to make Macs with more than one mouse button! I use four buttons and a scroll wheel!"

Well, there you have it: the opinion of our favorite engineer.

You know, he's probably right!

As a daughter in a Mac using family, I can definitely attest to my daddy's artsy-ness (he is, after all, a writer :)

Everything I know about computers, though, has been learned on a Mac, so as frustrating as Macs are to PC users, PCs irritate me because Mac is all I've ever really known.

Still "real men?" Honestly. :) In my humble opinion, the truest men -in the deepest darkest corners of their subconscious minds -are very artsy indeed. :)

I've always used PC, so the few times I've used a Mac, I've felt like I can't do anything, so I understand how you feel about PC's, since you've always used Mac. It's not like I have anything against Macs; its just not what I'm used to.

I think it's humorous, quite frankly, how riled up everyone gets over which computer is better!

Yeah! Someone who understands.

Thank you Mr. Pedersen! (I happen to use a high performance wireless mouse too, with a bunch of features)

You should have heard the debate after the training last night. Some of these Mac people are really committed! :-)

(and Katie, you can probably be glad JR isn't coming camping after THAT post....)

yeah, I might have to wear a disguise next time I see him.

I vote for PC's!
Although I was considering myself computer savvy, as soon as I used a Mac, I was (helplessly) lost--I'll get better at it one day, but for now, the PC is my friend!

All respect due Mr. Pedersen, but Mac does Wireless mouses that sync up via Bluetooth to any Mac. No loading any drivers or set-up time.

I can understand the hesitation of all PC users to use a Mac. I to was once a PC user and knew nothing about Mac. It was only upon taking that glorious leap over into the unknown that I finally found freedom. Once I learned some basic functions I found that Macs were much more intuitive then my old pc. In fact I found that it was much easier to do all things I always wanted to do but could never figure how to on a pc.

No response to previous comments about me.

OK, here I come. My #1 daughter was not present when I made my comments last night, nor did she ask me about sharing my thoughts on-line. So, I offer a bit of clarification...
1) The title ("Real men...") was not mine.
2) What I actually said was "Anyone working in business or industry uses PCs." Macs still seem to be used primarily in such fields as education, publishing, and music. As far as graphics is concerned, high end users (like animators) would not be caught using either a Mac or a PC.
3) I started on Mac years ago and made the transition to PC as I transitioned from education to engineering.
4) I consider the computer to be a tool, not a pet, so do not claim any real loyalty one way or the other. Choose the tool that will enable you to do your job most effectively. Hammering and sawing are both important tasks, but I would not want to be forced to use the same tool for both.
5) Having used both and been involved with teaching and training, I believe the learning curve for Windows is shorter than for the Mac OS. For us old-timers, we can still run batch files from the command line when needed. And I do love the right-click on my mouse. But, I am sure that some tasks can be accomplished more easily with a Mac.

Okay, okay, same thing...I was paraphrasing!

Um, yeah, I'm in so much trouble now...dear friends, please pray for my father to be merciful upon me!

Now that's funny! :)

I'll take all the blame, as I originated this 'contentious' issue in Blog-land...

Seriously though, I thought Mr. Pedersen's response was very well reasoned and thoughtful.

J.R.-
Thanks a lot! Now that I'm in trouble you think it's funny. :-) I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I'm just here for comic relief!

Ray-
That's very kind of you, but I doubt my father is going to buy it. :-)
